Groundwater Resources and TBA of Southern Africa

A report prepared by IGRAC in 2006

The objectives of this short project were as follows:

  • Development objective: To enhance sustainable development, use and protection of transboundary aquifers in the SADC region.
  • Institutional objective: To support SADC countries in exchange of information, sharing knowledge, and improving cooperation on groundwater resources.

The map of Transboundary Aquifers in Southern Africa - whose preparation was one of the project activities - is based on the map of Transboundary Aquifers in Africa. The map is made available via the IGRAC GGIS Global Overview. A Global Overview database is extended by a set of attributes that describes the aquifers. No attribute values are available at the moment. Those should be gradually supplied by the local experts with assistance of IGRAC. IGRAC will appreciate any contribution to the database and this can be made by using the attribute input form or by mailing to IGRAC.

A short overview of Groundwater Resources and Transboundary Aquifers of Southern Africa has been made as a part of this project. The project also included a preparation of a course material, to be used by IGRAC staff or regional water expers.

Beside the map, references to the most important Documents describing transboundary aquifers in the region are made available via IGRAC's MiM (Meta Information Module). If a document is available on-line, a link to it has been provided as well. Furthermore MiM contains information of Organisations and People involved in the management of groundwater in Southern Africa. MiM is continuously updated and augumented with contributions from groundwater people all over the world.
